Ordering Microfilm From LDS Salt Lake City -  Now On Line

Although you can still order microfilm at the local Family History Center you can now order from home over the Internet.  There are two types of loans:
  1. Short-term loans apply to microfilms only and the films must be returned within 90 days.  A 60 day renewal option is available after the short-term loan expires.
  2. Extended loans are also available which implies having films sent to the local Family History Center and remaining there indefinitely.  This costs a bit more.
In order to  obtain microfilms or microfiche you must set up an account.  As soon as you go to the ordering site you will be walked through this process.
Ordering Procedure:
  1. Determine which microfilm you need.  That is by going on line to the FAMILYSEARCH website and searching for a name or going to the Family Search Catalog.
  2. During your searches don't forget to use the beta site as there is new information available there.
  3. Go to the Microfilm Ordering Site and place your order.
Any problems please do not hesitate to call Deb Phillips at the local Family History Center: 403-526-0802

The Ontario section provides links to a lot of useful Ontario information.  Also, their prices on software such as FTM and Legacy are essentially the same as the US dollar price and you are supporting a Canadian company. - Earl)

A NOTE ABOUT THE CANADIAN GENEALOGICAL PROJECTS REGISTRY

If you are seeking information about Canadian data sources, you should first consult the Canadian Genealogical Projects Registry where you can immediately narrow your search by selecting the PROVINCE of interest, then the EVENT of interest (e.g. death, birth, census), and then SOURCE TYPE (e.g. civil record, church record, newspaper account). The last step is to search the resources for the specific community of interest. This is the largest finding aid of its kind in Canada, with over 9,000 links to genealogical data.

The  New England Historic Genealogical Society's Genealogy Technology Excellence gave it's first-ever award to the Alberta Family Histories Society. Specifically, the award recognized the innovation in content and navigational design of the Canadian Genealogical Projects Registry portion of the AFHS website. Two members of AFHS (Janet Morgan, who conceptualized the CGPR and Judith Rempel who developed it) accepted the award on behalf of AFHS at GenTech 2000 Conference in San Diego, California.)

(The NEHGS is the oldest genealogical society in North America - which makes the award to AFHS in Calgary pretty special!)
